| Getting around Wellington |
Getting around Wellington is easy because it is so compact with excellent
public transport system - regular buses and trains throughout the city and outer
regions. Perhaps one of the best ways to get around is to just go
walking! The city circular bus will take you past the major attractions
for NZ$2, connecting with the Wellington Railway station. Taxis service
can be another convenient choice.
The Cable Car leaves from Downtown Wellington to the top of Wellington's
hills. The Botanic Gardens where you will find some of the best views of
Wellington, is where the Cable Car stops. Just buy a NZ$5 day-tripper bus
pass to see as many of the sights as you can in a day. The Dominion Post
Ferry will also take you across Wellington harbour to seaside village Eastbourne
while the Tranz Metro Train Service will take you to Wellington's outlying
regions. You can explore the Wairarapa wine country, the beautiful Kapiti
Coast, Porirua and the Hutt Valley. Or else, use tour companies that
promise to provide you another excellent way to discover around Wellington.
By Air
From anywhere in New Zealand,
Wellington is less than an hour flight! Air New Zealand is New
Zealand's major domestic airline, while Freedom Air and Pacific Blue also
fly from Australia. Wellington airport is also only 15 minutes drive
from the city centre. A taxi fare should cost around NZ$20.
By Car
Traffic is not heavy and the scenery
is spectacular, making New Zealand to be an ideal country to explore by a
car.

By Rail and Coach
You can take a train or
coach to see New Zealand scenery. Intercity Coach line Service runs
throughout New Zealand. Also, there is a range of Tranz Scenic Rail
Routes from all major New Zealand cities. Wellington Railway Station
is just two minutes walk from Downtown Wellington, the departure point for
coaches, shuttles and taxis.
South Island Ferry Connection
Both the
Interisland Line and Bluebridge Cook Strait Ferry cross between the North
and the South Island, traveling across Cook Strait and through the
spectacular Marlborough Sounds up to nine times daily.
Cruise Ships
In summer, Wellington's harbour
is a popular destination for cruise ships.
